"Finding Inspiration In Black Powder Shooting"
Welcome to our About page where you will get to know everything about who we are and what we're about. Please feel free to have a browse and learn more about the New Zealand Black Powder Shooters Federation. Enjoy!

The NZ Black Powder Shooters Federation initially formed in 1978 and subsequently became an incorporated society in March of 1979. Initially the organisation was created to be a federation of affiliated clubs. However, as our membership is spread throughout New Zealand, our membership base has subsequently morphed into a mix of individual and family members, as well as affiliated clubs. We also became a founding member of COLFO, (Coalition of Licenced Firearms Owners).
The Federation holds National championships in three stages during the calendar year, with the Long Range Rifle Champs usually held towards the end of the summer or early autumn, the National Rifle and Pistol champs being held in June and the National Shotgun Champs being held, usually between March and June.
The International competition is also made available as a result of our affiliation with M.L.A.I.C. (Muzzle loading Association International Confederation), the world governing body for our sport. Shotgun, short range Rifle and Pistol and Long Range Rifle events are available every two years. These events are hosted by MLAIC member nations and give our members the opportunity to represent New Zealand on the international stage.
In addition to the three main National Championships, the NZBPSF also runs two very popular rendezvous style events annually.
The Mountain Man, a week long event that runs from 27th December and the Winter Mountain Man, a two day event held at King’s Birthday weekend in June. These events are held on the Federation’s national range at Tarrantsville, north of Taumarunui. The rendezvous have been running for over forty years and are a very popular and colourful attraction. They take the form of an early 19th century rendezvous, where participants take on a persona that generally reflects the time and place of their historical interest. That could be, and often is, early 19th century America, or colonial New Zealand. Both events are family oriented and are a very laid back form of shooting and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with old friends. Often, friendships born at these events last a lifetime. We cater for all ages and provide a wide range of events that ensures, everyone will find something of interest to keep them challenged and entertained.

By joining the NZ Black Powder Shooters Federation you will have ready access to all the necessary essentials for keeping your favourite smoke pole working. From powder, to caps and all the associated accoutrements. In addition to the many long friendships that you will make, you will have access to many different styles of black powder shooting, from short range plinking to long range paper and steel or silhouettes. In addition, we endeavour to keep you informed of the ongoing changes to firearms legislation with updates as they come to hand, including updates from COLFO and any other relevant items of interest.
Black powder gets under your skin so beware, it can also be very addictive. For more information hit << CONTACT>>
